Carnarvon to Point Samson
18th May, Sunday
We set off at from Carnarvon at 9’ish, after saying the usual good-byes, swapping phone nos. etc. We thougth that we might stop at Nanatarra roadhouse for an overnighter but it was still quite early and we thought that we would push on to a 24hour free camping stopover to give us an easier drive to Point Samson tomorrow. We want to stop in Karatha to stock up with some food. The drive was spotted with the usual cattle and the odd herd of brumbies. The road was quite apart from the road trains but I’m guessing it was because it was Sunday. The terrain just before Nanatarra starts getting quite hilly and something different to look at. The road at some spots is so straight that we get quite excited when we come to a bend. 🙂 We crossed the 26th parrallel and the tropic of Capricorn. The contrast in the colours of the terrain is quite spectacular. The deep red of the dirt, the green of the grasses and bush and the blue of the sky is stunning. There is alot of water still lying around in spots and some of the road has flood damage so we have to go carefully in places. We eventually stopped off at Robe river overnight camping, quite alot of people there. We don’t unhitch the caravan as it’s just somewhere to have dinner, an early night and an early start in the morning. We were sitting having a drink when this guy with 2 little girls came by with their notebooks, writing all about all the dogs the meet on their travels. They wanted to know Hugo’s name, breed, age etc. (which they were writing down). Hugo, being the total gentleman that his is decided to dump right in front of them. The eldest girl went “EEEEEEEEW”. I ran inside to get a bag to pick it up and the dad said to the girls that if they had a dog that is what they have to expect. The eldest little girl, said “Give me the bag, I’ll do it”. This is the first time that I have an offer from someone to pick up Hugos crap. Cracked me up. There is no water in the river as it’s seasonal, so Ralphie went and collected some wood, that had drifted down from the recent flood and lit a fire, had dinner and watched the roadtrains coming over the bridge. The skies are starting to look awesome, no light polution and we will probably get the telescope out soon. It really is magic.
Nice one,,it looks calm and peaceful.
